Carrying Forward a Legacy of Compassion, Hope & Healing

“Her smile comforted people before words ever could.”

The Josie Woodward Legacy Foundation was created to honor the beautiful life, compassionate heart, and enduring spirit of Josie Woodward—a devoted nurse, loving daughter, treasured friend, and a light to everyone who knew her.

Josie had a rare gift for making people feel seen, safe, and cared for. Whether at a patient’s bedside, among friends, or meeting someone for the very first time, she carried an infectious smile, a radiant spirit, and a goofy, fun-loving personality that instantly brought comfort and joy to those around her. She believed caring for others was more than a profession—it was a calling she lived out every single day.

Josie grew up in Lee’s Summit, Missouri, attended Blue Springs schools, and graduated from Blue Springs South High School in 2019. There, she proudly danced with the Touch of Silver Dance Team, served on student council, and was honored to be co-captain of the dance team during her senior year. Her love of friendship, teamwork, and fun shined through every performance and every moment in between.

She continued her education at the University of Missouri, where she was a dedicated member and captain of the Golden Girls, while also an active member of Delta Delta Delta Sorority, and an exceptional nursing student. Her compassion and dedication led her to a career in nursing, where she made a profound impact as both an ICU and pain management nurse. Patients, families, and colleagues cherished her warmth, empathy, and unwavering positivity—qualities that earned her multiple nominations for the DAISY Award, recognizing extraordinary nurses.

As effortlessly as Josie made life look, she was carrying more than many realized. The transition after college proved difficult. Without the constant structure and busy schedule she had always known, there was more time for insecurities, anxiety, and other mental health struggles that had quietly lingered beneath the surface. Hoping to cope, Josie turned to alcohol, not fully realizing how strongly she was genetically predisposed to addiction.

Like so many people facing this disease, she tried to overcome it on her own before recognizing the seriousness of addiction and the grip it can have on even the strongest, smartest, and kindest individuals. Josie courageously chose recovery and sought help. Even while battling shame and embarrassment, she became a source of strength and encouragement for others walking alongside her in recovery. Her compassion never disappeared—it simply found another place to serve.

While many people may remember that Josie left this world on October 6, 2025, we want what is remembered most to be the way she lived. We want people to remember how she made others feel.

We remember the laughter she brought into every room, the random texts that made our family smile, the spontaneous dancing in the kitchen, the perfectly timed jokes, and the genuine way she listened with her whole heart. Josie had an extraordinary ability to make every person feel valued, loved, and never alone. Her kindness was effortless, her joy contagious, and her love for others limitless.

Through scholarships, advocacy, recovery support, and community outreach, the Josie Woodward Legacy Foundation exists to continue the work Josie began: helping people heal, believe in themselves, and know they are never alone. We are committed to breaking the stigma surrounding mental health and addiction by encouraging honest conversations, expanding access to support, and reminding people that asking for help is an act of courage—not weakness.

Josie’s legacy lives on through every student whose dreams are supported, every family that finds hope, every person who chooses recovery, every nurse who leads with compassion, and every life touched by kindness.

We invite you to join us in carrying her light forward—because together, we can ensure that Josie’s compassion, joy, and hope continue to make a difference for generations to come.
